His works, predominantly social issue dramas and action crime films, have been acclaimed for their gritty realism and scope. He is the recipient of five National Film Awards, eight Ananda Vikatan Cinema Awards, two Filmfare South Awards and the Amnesty International Italia Award from 72nd Venice Film Festival.
