His directorial debut, Detour (1967), received international acclaim, winning the Special Golden Prize and the Prix FIPRESCI at the 5th Moscow International Film Festival. Stoyanov's films often explored complex social and psychological themes, contributing to the depth and diversity of Bulgarian cinema.
