When Russian troops invade Ukraine in February 2022, the port city of Marioepol is one of the first to be completely surrounded. The inhabitants are overtaken by the speed of the attack and the heavy bombing. Their lives in the bustling industrial city come to a halt abruptly. The Russians offer a 'safe' way out to Russia, but most residents refuse. Many take refuge in the Azovstal site, one of the largest steel mills in Europe, where dozens of Cold War bunkers are hidden.

When the Russians surround the city of Marioepol, thousands of residents from the city entrench themselves in the basements of the Azov steel mill. A reconstruction of the 82 dark days of recent Ukrainian history, in which courage, creativity and tolerance help them survive.
